CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE 4TH TEXAS CAVALRY GROUPING

This grouping is from a member of the 4th Texas Cavalry and was brought in by a member of the family of Hereford Texas named Mrs. Hazel Joslin. Family lore says these items belonged to Pvt. Silas Joslin of Company "B" 4th Texas Cavalry. Items included are 1) Small Leather Covered Box that has period applied brass tacks to the front that says 4th Cavalry Texas with an applied five pointed Star to the center. 2) Set of Stirrups with a Five Pointed Star to the bottoms of the Stirrups. 3) Small Tintype of a Confederate Cavalryman measuring 2 X 2 1/2 inches 4) Set of period Brass Spurs 4) 19th century handmade solid steel compass 5) Small Pocket Knife. The 4th Texas Cavalry Regiment was a unit of mounted volunteers from Texas that fought in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. The unit was organized in September 1861 with the aim of seizing New Mexico Territory. In 1862, the regiment served in the unsuccessful New Mexico Campaign. In 1863, it was in action at Galveston, Fort Bisland, Irish Bend, Second Donaldsonville, Kock's Plantation, Sterling's Plantation, and Bayou Bourbeau. In 1864, the regiment fought at Mansfield and Pleasant Hill in the Red River Campaign. The unit surrendered in May 1865.
