SERIAL 3137. BARREL 21 1/2". CALIBER .50 SMITH. The Smith Carbine was unique in that it broke apart in the middle for loading and it used rubber cartridges which sealed the gases in the breech. The name of the distributor for the manufacturer, Poultney & Trimble of Baltimore, Maryland, is stamped on the carbine's receivers. During the war , it was used by various Union cavalry units include: 1st Connecticut Cavalry Regiment 7th Illinois Cavalry Regiment 11th Illinois Cavalry Regiment 1st Massachusetts Cavalry Regiment 10th New York Cavalry Regiment 6th Ohio Cavalry Regiment 9th Ohio Cavalry Regiment 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment 3rd West Virginia Cavalry Regiment 1st Alabama Cavalry Regiment (Union) This carbine saw use. A coat of finish has been added to metal and wood giving the metal a freckled appearance of brown patina. The stocks have numerous dings but the left side stock cartouche is still visible but not easily read. Action opens properly. Bore is sharp but has some black powder abrasion. The hammer needs a new mainspring as it works but no power. A
