Stellar 1865 made snare drum by William S. Thompkins of New York. Handwritten inside shell: Wm S. Tompkins & Sons / Makers / Yonkers NY / Drums of all sizes / Made to order July 4th 1865. William Shute Tompkins Birthdate: August 22, 1812 Birthplace: White Plains, Westchester County, NY, United States Death: November 28, 1882 (70) Yonkers, Westchester County, NY, United States. Snare Drum measures 17 inches in diameter and 14 1/2 inches tall. Drum has the original heads and is period strung. The drum is painted on the bands with Red, White and Blue with a geometrical pattern at the air hole. Along with the drum is a note that reads in part "This Drum was used by me Wm Denise and the first day May 30th 1869 by order of J A Logan Commander SOV I was drummer boy in the New York 1st Army of the Potomac 61 - 63.
