CIVIL WAR IDED GROUP - CORPS BADGE PHOTO LETTERS

[ translate ]

Civil War grouping of items identified to Aubert E. Humiston, Co. K, 81st Ohio Volunteer Infantry. This grouping consists of his 15th Corps Badge made by Tiffany & Co., letters, tintype photograph, U.S. belt plate, ladder badge and a painted regulation issue mess plate. After surviving three years of hard campaigning, Humiston or a member of his family memorialized his service in a most unique way taking what was certainly his most ornate military item, his Tiffany & Company made 15th Army Corps badge, and combining it with what was one of the most simple and utilitarian items that a soldier could carry, his tin mess plate. He affixed the badge to the center of the plate by inserting the brass loops through the bottom of the plate and tying the loops with a piece of string/twine. Remnants of the string remain and since the badge is loose, it is possible to examine the back to see the "Tiffany & Co." manufacturer's stamp. The plate measures 9 inches in diameter and is an actual US Federal issued plate. Gold lettering painted around the badge reads "From Atlanta to the Sea '62 - '65". The badge retains traces of red paint, designating 1st Division, at the base and side of the black enameled cartridge box. Also in the grouping are two complete and one partial handwritten letters with stamped envelopes from Aubert Humiston to his mother. He writes about camp life and troop movements and asks her to send a couple of badly needed shirts. Secured in the largest envelope was a tintype of a very young Pvt. Aubert E. Humiston wearing an overcoat and forage coat and holding a Springfield rifle with bayonet. The tintype measures 2.75" X 3.25". Rounding out this grouping is his beautifully patinated U.S. arrow back belt plate and his named Co. K, 81st Ohio Volunteer Infantry ladder badge. Humiston was 18 years old when he enlisted on 8/31/1862 and mustered in as a Private in Company K, 81st Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was Mustered Out on 7/13/1865 at Louisville, Kentucky. During his time of service, the 81st OVI was engaged at Corinth, Mississippi, Town Creek, Alabama, Sam's Mills, Tennessee, the following sites in Georgia; Resaca, Ley's Ferry, Rome Cross Roads, Dallas, Marietta, Atlanta, Jonesboro, Lovejoy Station; Chattanooga, Tennessee, Cheraw, South Carolina, and Bentonville, North Carolina. This grouping was sold in 2006 at a Mount Vernon, Ohio auction of the Groves family; direct descendents of Aubert Humiston. In-house shipping is available. Pickup is Monday, April 29th from 11 am to 3 pm in Carroll, Ohio 43112 or we will provide in-house shipping for this item. Once packed up we will send you an invoice for shipping & handling.
