M1861 US Cartridge box. New York City: H.A. Dingee. WITH Original "SNY" State of New York brass plate. With original interior tin box inserts. Inner flap stamped "H.A. Dingee / N.Y." Inscribed to flap underside: "L. Hodgson Co. E. 2d. N.Y."
A fine New York cartridge box with excellent identification to Lister Hodgson. Enlisting at 27 years old in September 1862, he joined Company E of the 2nd New York Infantry. The regiment was part of the famed Third Corps, Army of the Potomac, and was in the thick of fighting at Bristoe Station and 2nd Bull Run in 1862. The bloody work continued at Chancellorsville in May 1863 where Hodgson would be gravely wounded on May 3rd, along with 24 others of his regiment; he did not survive.
