John P. Sheahan enlisted in Company E of the 31st Maine Volunteer Infantry in early 1864, rising to First Lieutenant before being captured during the brutal fighting during the Siege of Petersburg in the summer of 1864. Sent south to the officer stockade at Columbia, South Carolina Sheahan executed a daring breakout in late 1864. Donning Confederate grey, he successfully traveled hundreds of miles behind Southern lines before slipping safely into Union lines. Staged on 25 April 1865, just days after the fall of Richmond, Appomattox, and Lincoln's assassination, this lecture gave his Down East neighbors a firsthand chronicle of Confederate collapse from an operative who lived it undercover.
