[ translate ]

West Virginia Veteran's medal issued to Thomas Driscol, Battery C, 1st Regiment West Virginia Light Artillery. This medal has the "Honorably Discharged" suspension bar designating that Driscol was not wounded or did not die during his service. The original ribbon is present but detached from the medal. Rim is engraved "THOs DRISCOL BATTY C 1st REG Lt. ARTILLERY VOLS". The Battery was organized at Wheeling, West Virginia in 1862 and mustered out in 1865. During its time of service, 33 men of Battery C were killed or died of wounds. 106 of the 173 men in the Battery were from Washington County, Ohio. The battery was engaged at Cross Keys, Port Republic, Cedar Mountain (reserve), Rappahannock Station, Gainesville, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Bristoe Campaign, Mine Run Campaign, and Defenses of Washington D.C. While Driscol's exact muster out date is not listed on the Civil War Database, the following three references indicate that he was still serving with the Battery until at least after the Gettysburg Campaign; Broadfoot's Soldier Index for West Virginia, Washington County Ohio Soldier's Index by Newton, and West Virginia Adjutant General Report for 1864.
