[CIVIL WAR]. YARNALL, Ellis (1817–1905). An unpublished typed manuscript signed for “The Great American Civil War As Told in Weekly Letters to London.” Harford, PA: 19th century. 8vo, (254 x 203 mm). Unpublished typed manuscript comprising 13 individually bound chapters of correspondence sent from the author to founder and editor of The Guardian of London, Mountague Bernard, with accounts from an American’s perspective detailing the progress of the American Civil War from the election of Abraham Lincoln as president in November 1860 to February 1865, when the author returned to England. A fascinating firsthand account written for a British audience of one of the most tumultuous periods in American history – one which captured the attention of the entire world. Ellis Yarnell was a popular author of the late 19th century, while Mountague Bernard would go on to publish A Historical Account of the Neutrality of Great Britain During the American Civil War in 1870, which is believed to have used Yarnall’s letters as sources.
