Title: CLAIRE VOYANT No Number [No. 1] * Cosmic Aeroplane Pedigree
Place Published:
Publisher:Leader Enterprises [Indicia: Pentagon Publishing Co.]
Date Published: 1946
Description:

VG- (3.5). COSMIC AEROPLANE PEDIGREE. Small chip to front cover near bottom spine, nicks and short tears to edges of front cover, wavy curl to top spine region, corners of front cover curled, bottom corner has tiny chip, light sun shadow to bottom edge of front cover, tiny marginal nick to 1st page. Off-white pages with edges very lightly tanned. Clean and press to 4.0 (if not for spine chip, would be pressable to 5.0). Numerous penciled check marks throughout as called for by pedigree. Cover: Uncredited. Art: Jack Sparling. GPAnalysis: No reported sales in this grade. Most recent sale in any grade: A 2.0 sold for $320 in October 2021.

The Cosmic Aeroplane collection was amassed by an art teacher who allegedly used "Good Girl" comics as classroom aids (an unlikely story, as no school board would ever have approved such a curriculum). Cosmic Aeroplane books are identifiable by penciled check marks scattered in the margins, telltale glyphs of the teacher's preoccupation with sexy comic book gals. It's said that the teacher almost exclusively marked panels featuring attractive women, which is indeed the case for this mag.

Amnesiac chorus girl Clare Voyant tries to regain her lost memories and solve the mystery of the lash marks that criss-cross her lovely back. Claire bares her back twice to show the reader her lash marks; the mixture of cruelty and eroticism is a pre-Code staple that transcends the horror subgenre. Meanwhile, on the back cover ad, zitty teens lament their fate ("Tom, why don't Sis and I get invited to proms and parties?" "Frankly, Jim, it's those ugly blackheads").

A deluxe limited edition of 12 hardcover catalogues is available, in addition to a small number of softcovers. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $40, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Eight of the 12 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now. To order, contact ivan@pbagalleries.com.
