Condition Report:
This painting is in good condition, clean and ready to hang.
The artist's substantial wood panel remains uncradled and is flat and even, with just very slight convex bowing visible along the edges.
Ultra-violet light reveals notably a thin circa 4cm vertical line of retouching near the far left of the upper framing edge (addressing a minor crack in the panel), a circa 3x4cm area in the tiles near the lower left corner, a small spot in the seated man's left shoulder, and some other minor scattered spots. The work appears to have been selectively cleaned in the past as there are traces of old residual varnish in the background in the upper right under U.V. light.
Presented in a decorative gilt frame.
In reality the colours are richer and have less of a yellow/orange cast than in the catalogue illustration.
Provenance:
Estate of Eberhard Hempel, Dresden (1886 - 1967)
