CLERMONT-FERRAND IN TWENTY YEARS.
Printed map, 1 sheet, 63 x 78 cl, mounted on canvas. Lithograph by Ducros, Paris, undated. Very good condition. Handwritten inscription in blue pencil beneath the title: “August 15, 1874 Ch. Tardieu.” Overwriting in blue and red pencil along the railroad tracks near the station and on the gardens near Place de Jaude.
The map is enigmatic due to its title; however, it reproduces in its entirety another map of Clermont published by the Blanzat printing house in Clermont in 1864, which was additionally embellished with views of monuments. That earlier map was itself a reproduction of the one drawn up in 1858 by Auguste Sauty.
The signature may belong to Charle Gilbert Tardieu, a lawyer in Clermont and mayor of Herment, and father of the Auvergne historian Ambroise Tardieu.
