Maracle was from the Mohawk Nation, Ontario, and is recognised for his depictions of the plight of urban First Nation peoples in the 1970s. He was strongly opposed to the injustices and prejudices suffered by his people and this is evident in his work. Sometimes using and subverting traditional native imagery, Maracle forged a distinctive expressionistic style. His work was politicised and aimed to make his audience aware of the complex realities of these social issues. Nonetheless, his work is often permeated with humour, though his use of bright colours and bold imagery was also a comment on the banality of popular culture.
