It is one of the most fascinating, coveted and difficult to find carbonaceous meteorites.
\r
CM carbonaceous chondrites are distinguished by small concretions and refractory inclusions (0. 3 mm) , abundant fine-grained matrix (70 vol%) and abundant hydrocarbons as well as amino acids.
\r
It makes them the oldest known matter that exists on Earth, although recently material from 7,000 million years ago has just been found, that is, from before the formation of our own planet and even our Solar System.
\r
Carbonaceous chondrites comprise about 4% of all meteorites
\r
CMs have frequently been described as "the best studied meteorite in history. "
\r
This specimen is a sheet, showing the interior of the meteorite and the fusion crust.
\r
They have been discovered to have surprising and unknown catalytic properties.
\r
Its minerals are capable of synthesizing, in aqueous solution and in the presence of formamide, key organic compounds in prebiotic chemistry.
\r
Such catalytic properties point to a fundamental role in the origin of life on our planet and why not somewhere else in the Universe.
