COLLECTION RELATING TO CHARLES CORNWALLIS, MARQUIS CORNWALLIS (ENGLISH, 1738-05) 1752 3 PCS. A collection of ephemera relating to Charles Cornwallis, first Marquis Cornwallis, the British general who surrendered to George Washington during the American Revolutionary War at the siege of Yorktown. The book, Memoirs of the Life and Ministerial Conduct, with some free Remarks on the Political Writings of the Late Lord Viscount Bolingbroke, was printed in London in 1752. The book is bound in leather and bears the bookplate of Marquis Cornwallis, which depicts his armorial crest; a fine example of the Jacobean style in vogue during the 1730s. The framed engraving of Cornwallis was engraved by Freeman after the painting by J.S. Copley of the Royal Academy. The engraving was printed in 1846 and bears a facsimile signature. The frame measures 26" x 16" and holds the engraving, a bookplate, and other reprinted historical ephemera explaining the significance of the original eighteenth-century items.
Condition Report: The print has light toning and soiling with a few small stains. The book has weathered leather boards with light toning and foxing throughout. There are handwritten letters at the top of the page bearing the bookplate with a blue ink smudge overtop. JMD
