COMMEMORATIVE BADGE “RAFTING THROUGH POLAND TO THE SEA” — LMK, 1933
diameter: 25 mm
A commemorative badge issued by the Maritime and Colonial League on the occasion of the nationwide river rafting expedition “Across Poland to the Sea,” organized in August 1933.
The event took the form of a star-shaped river trip—participants set out from various parts of the country, sometimes covering very long stretches along rivers, and then converged on a common route leading down the Vistula to Gdańsk and Gdynia.
The official gathering took place on August 4, 1933, in Złotoria, at the mouth of the Drwęca River where it flows into the Vistula. From there, the participants continued through Toruń, Fordon, Chełmno, Grudziądz, Gniew, and Tczew. They reached Gdańsk on August 11, from where the boats and kayaks were transported by ship—including the “Dar Pomorza”—to Gdynia. The official closing ceremony took place on August 13, 1933.
Brigadier General Stanisław Kwaśniewski served as the expedition’s commander, while Major Feliks Kozubowski served as the expedition leader. Approximately 2,000 people participated in the event aboard nearly 1,000 watercraft.
The expedition combined the promotion of water sports and tourism with a strong patriotic message.
The obverse of the badge depicts a stylized sailing boat on choppy waves, heading toward the coast. The outer rim bears the inscription “SPŁYW PRZEZ POLSKĘ DO MORZA” (Rafting Through Poland to the Sea), while at the bottom are the organizer’s initials and the date: “LMK 1933.”
