CONFEDERATE BOYLE, GAMBLE & MCFEE ARTILLERY SHORT

[ translate ]

SWORD. Overall length: 25 1/4". Blade length: 19". This scarce artillery short sword was mfg. in Richmond, VA for the Confederate forces by Boyle, Gamble & McFee. It was patterned directly after the US M1832 artillery short sword. It is quite rare indeed to find these with an original Boyle, Gamble & McFee scabbard intact. The somewhat elliptical blade has a sm. central fuller on each side. Solid brass hilt that includes a crossguard with lobed ends, ribbed grip and ovoid pommel. Brass mounted leather scabbard features a frog button on the throat and triangular tip over a black leather body. CONDITION: blade shows a light gray patina with scattered small spots of light oxidation. The edge has several noticeable nicks and the tip has a slight bend. The entire hilt has a pleasing mustard brown patina and other than normal wear, shows no damage. Scabbard body has a few sm. losses from flaking but remains amazingly solid. The mounts have a very pleasing mustard brown patina. Frog stud is slightly bent. (02-14530/BF). $3,500-5,000.
