Profile bust portrait with molded edge. Reverse inscribed with an inventory number followed by “Mazeppa General des ____”. On a modern wood stand.
Medallion diameter 2.5”.
Note: Mazepa (or Mazeppa),1639-1709, was a Ukrainian Prince of the Holy Roman Empire who deserted Tsar Peter I and attempted an alliance with King Charles XII of Sweden. Mazepa’s legacy continued as a popular Romanticism subject, with a poem by Lord Byron, operas by Tchaikovsky and Marie Grandval and a symphonic poem by Liszt. Today he is still a divisive figure between Russia and Ukraine.
