Peasant Family Resting in a Mountain Landscape,
oil on canvas
78.7 x 99.2 cm (31 x 39 in.)
framed dimensions: 98.4 x 120.6 cm (38 3/4 x 47 1/2 in.)
indistinctly signed lower left
LOT NOTES
Before a low ruined wall, with a broad valley and distant mountains behind, a peasant family pauses on the road. An older man in a knotted head-cloth sits wrapped in a plaid blanket on a pile of stones. Two young women in laced sandals stand arm in arm beside him, and a boy in a wide-brimmed hat leans on his staff with his bundle over his shoulder. The costumes, especially the laced sandals, recall the peasants of the Ciociaria south of Rome. These ciociari were among the most popular models for painters working in Rome during the nineteenth century. The frame bears a later plaque naming the Venetian painter Antonio Ermolao Paoletti (1834?1912).
Keywords: 19th Century Genre Painting, Italian Peasant Family, Ciociaria Costume, Continental School, Pastoral Landscape, Carved Giltwood Frame
