CORNELIS DE VOS "Portrait of a Lady", c.1635

[ translate ]

Professor Van der Stighelen, author of the catalog raisonné of the portraits of Cornelis de Vos, highlights the uniqueness of this specimen taken from a bust and compares it to a Portrait of an Elderly Woman in the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent (inv. 1920). Due to the stylistic characteristics, the modeling of the face with contrasting lights and shadows and the way the figure contrasts on the background, brings it closer to the portraits of seated ladies from the old Van Diemen Gallery in Berlin (cat. 97) and from the National Museum in Stockholm (inv. 409), dated around 1635 Origin: - Kunsthaus Malmedé, antique dealer in Cologne, Germany Published in an advertisement in 1936 in The Burlington Magazine -Neumeister, Munich, auction 29 November 1984 -Collection Dr. Gustav Rau, Germany -Donated to UNICEF and auctioned at Lempertz, Cologne, 14 -16 November 2013, lot 1230 -Private collection Bibliography:-Van der Stighelen, K., "De portretten van Cornelis de Vos (1584/5-1651): een kritische catalogus".
