Title: CRIME ILLUSTRATED No. 1
Place Published:
Publisher:EC [Indicia: L.L. Publishing Co., Inc.]
Date Published: November-December, 1955
Description:

CGC certified: VG (4.0). Cream to off-white pages. Cover: Joe Orlando. Scripts: Al Feldstein, Jack Oleck, Richard Smith, John Larner. Art: Reed Crandall, George Evans, Graham Ingels, Joe Orlando, Bernie Krigstein. GPAnalysis: No reported sales in this grade in seven years. No reported sales below 9.0 since 2019.

This is the mag that led Bernie Krigstein to quit EC for good. The original ending of Feldstein and Krigstein's "Fall Guy for Murder" allowed the story's antagonist to get away with murder, with an innocent man taking the rap. This offended Krigstein's moral sense, and he altered the ending so that the innocent man killed the murderer.

"When Feldstein and Gaines rejected his new ending, Krigstein quit on the spot, leaving EC for good. Feldstein gave the unfinished story to Reed Crandall for inking, which resulted in an unusual meshing of styles." — Roger Hill, The Complete Crime Illustrated. Russ Cochran: 2006, p.1.

A limited edition of 150 softcover and 15 hardcover catalogues is available. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $30, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Ten of the 15 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now. To order, contact ivan@pbagalleries.com.

Consignments welcome for PBA's December 2021 Comic Book sale. Top prices for Pre-Code Horror, Golden Age, Silver Age, original art and ephemera. Send inquiries to ivan@pbagalleries.com.
