Publisher:EC [Indicia: I.C. Publishing Co., Inc.]
Date Published: December-January, 1950

CGC certified: VG (4.0). Off-white pages. Cover: Johnny Craig. Stories and art: Johnny Craig, Al Feldstein, John Alton, Fred Peters. 1st Appearance: The Crypt Keeper; the Crypt of Terror. Gerber Photo-Journal Guide scarcity index: 7 ("Scarce. Between 21 and 50 still in existence"). GPAnalysis: No reported sales in this grade since 2013. Only two 2021 sales: a 2.0 sold for $7450 in May, and a 4.5 sold for $12,000 on Halloween.

Birth of the New Trend. A comic book of inestimable significance in the annals of EC and pre-Code horror. "The very first Crypt Keeper story, written by me as an experimental tryout." — Al Feldstein, quoted in Grant Geissman's Tales of Terror: The EC Companion. Fantagraphics: 2000, p. 59.

"The Crypt-Keeper's first two efforts are pallid and tentative stuff.... But this is mere quibbling and nit-picking. If Feldstein and Gaines were temporarily paralyzed by stage fright, they had good cause. They were on the verge of something very, very big, and we are all in their debt." — Bill Mason, The Complete Crime Patrol Vol. 2. Russ Cochran: 1993.

A deluxe limited edition of 12 hardcover catalogues is available, in addition to a small number of softcovers. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $40, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Eight of the 12 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now. To order, contact ivan@pbagalleries.com.
