Title: CRIME SUSPENSTORIES No. 9
Place Published:
Publisher:EC [Indicia: L.L. Publishing Co., Inc.]
Date Published: February-March, 1952
Description:

VG (4.0). Several creases to top right corner of front cover, band of blue ink sprayed to bottom edge of covers and pageblock (distributors would sometimes spray color on the edges of new arrivals to identify the vendor to whom unsold copies should be returned), several pages miscut with tears and marginal paper losses not affecting art. Cream to off-white pages. Professionally cleaned and pressed by Comics In A Flash. Plots and scripts: Bill Gaines, Al Feldstein. Cover: Johnny Craig. Art: Johnny Craig, Jack Davis, Jack Kamen, Graham Ingels. Artist's biography: Johnny Craig. GPAnalysis: A 4.0 sold for $170 in June 2019; a 3.5 sold for $290 in August 2020.

Johnny Craig's "Understudy to a Corpse," in which a gold-digging gal inadvertently offs an actor impersonating her intended target, shows the writer-artist gaining ground as a master of psychological terror.

"Dangerous dolls, deranged deviants, dashing detectives, and darkened doorways were all drawn with the same clean, precise lines. Murder, mayhem, mania, and sweat — lots of sweat! Johnny Craig, the master of comics noir, rendered it all with excruciating exactness." — Thommy Burns, "Slow and Steady Wins," The Woman Who Loved Life and Other Stories Illustrated by Johnny Craig. Fantagraphics: 2019, p. vii.

A deluxe limited edition of 12 hardcover catalogues is available, in addition to a small number of softcovers. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $40, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Eight of the 12 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now. To order, contact ivan@pbagalleries.com.
