CSA Brigadier General W.W. Allen, 1864 Letter Endorsed by Colonel J. Warren Grigsby

Allen, William W. (1835-1894). Confederate brigadier general commanding a division of the Cavalry Corps, Army of Tennessee. Secretarial letter signed "Wm. W. Allen," 1p, 8.125 x 10.5 in., "Headquarters Allen's Div. Cav. / Lawtonville, South Carolina." December 30, 1864. Addressed to Colonel John Warren Grigsby (1818-1877), 6th Kentucky Cavalry.

In the letter, Allen advises Grigsby of "General order no. '19,'" which "requires all trans[portation] except ambulances and Brigade ordnance wagons, to be driven hereafter by negroes." Further, he asks about the process forward of supplying the command with African American teamsters in compliance with the order.

Wounded in battle at Milton, Tennessee in April 1863, Grigsby participated in Morgan's Raid into Ohio just months later and narrowly escaped capture. He was later appointed Chief of Staff of General Joseph Wheeler's cavalry corps.
Condition Report: Extensive tracking notations on verso. Areas of staining and loss, most notable at left margin and at fold lines.
