CUSTER SCOUT WHITE MAN RUNS HIM 1908 Copper Plate
EDWARD S. CURTIS. White Man Runs Him, 1908. 7.3x5.3" image on 8.9x6.3" copper plate. Plate date 1908. From Volume 3, Sioux, of The North American Indian. Engraved on plate recto: White Man Runs Him / From Copyright Photograph 1908 by E.S. Curtis / Photogravure John Andrew & Son.
Gen. George Custer hired four Crow scouts to lead him to Little Big Horn where he lost both his life and the battle. White Man Runs Him was one of those Crow Scouts. Curtis spent a considerable amount of time with the scouts at the battlefield in Montana with White Man Runs Him providing critical information about Custer's failure-noting that after Custer saw Reno and his men on the run, Custer instead of coming to their aid, ignored them moving his men to the field where they were defeated, and all killed.
Condition Report: Very Good. Minor scratches, tarnish, dents, abrasions, small dark spots, and ink residue throughout plate surface.
