Lot Essay
On 26 May 2020, Czapek unveiled the Antarctique Terre Adélie, the inaugural model of the Antarctique collection, conceived as a new generation of watches combining preciousness and fine watchmaking with the versatility required for everyday wear. Building upon the success of the original model, Czapek subsequently introduced the Antarctique Passage de Drake, further developing the distinctive character of the collection.

The model takes its name from the English explorer Sir Francis Drake and the Drake Passage, the stretch of ocean connecting the Atlantic and Pacific between Cape Horn, the southernmost point of South America, and the South Shetland Islands of Antarctica. Renowned for its stormy seas, powerful currents and icy conditions, it remains one of the most challenging maritime passages in the world, an evocative name for Czapek’s contemporary sports watch.

At the heart of the Antarctique is the SXH5 automatic calibre, the first movement to be conceived entirely in-house by Czapek from a blank page. Every element was developed with meticulous attention to detail in collaboration with some of the finest Swiss manufacturing partners and craftsmen, reflecting Czapek’s philosophy of ‘We Collect Rare People’.

The movement’s off-centre micro-rotor provides an unobstructed view of its distinctive architecture, while a free-sprung balance with variable inertia, regulated by four adjustable gold weights, allows for highly precise adjustment. The gear train is secured by a series of seven skeletonised bridges, whose delicate, lace-like forms draw inspiration both from 19th-century pocket watches and the contemporary rotor of Czapek’s Faubourg de Cracovie chronograph.

Visible through the caseback, the calibre SXH5 also demonstrates Czapek’s commitment to traditional movement decoration combined with modern manufacturing techniques. The bridges feature elaborate finishing that brings together traditional haute horlogerie anglage with state-of-the-art laser engraving, creating a movement whose architecture and decoration are as integral to the character of the Antarctique as its exterior design.
