The sides and top are made of hinoki cypress wood and lacquered dark red.

The upper part is constructed with four drawers of different sizes and a hinged door with ornate open work iron hardware, opening to two more small drawers. The lower part with two large drawers.

The drawers are equipped with large decorative lock plates in the shape of a crest depicting a wood sorrel 酢漿草 (katabami) . Flanked by sturdy iron ‘warabite’-shaped bail handles with decorative elongated escutcheons. The smooth running drawers are very deep and have a lot of volume, for easy storage

The sides are equipped with four pole-carrying handles in total, one on each side of the upper and lower part for easy transport and “locking” the upper section to the lower part

Dimensions:
Height 123. 1 cm, Width 105. 9 cm, Depth 43. 2 cm. Meiji period (1868-1912)

It is in a very good completely restored condition. Please look at the photos for a condition reference. Including one key for the hinged door. It functions in the old fashioned Japanese way.

These kind of cabinets originate from the castle town Yonezawa, which lies in the southeast corner of the Yamagata prefecture. The castle town of Yonezawa in the Tōhoku region developed a chest-on-chest style of tansu for clothing storage, strongly influenced by the refined lacquer finishing techniques of the Mikune area of the Japan Sea coast. The distinctive placement of the kobirakido (hinged door compartment) in the top chest, rather than the lower chest, is a distinguishing feature.

When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
