***”[Caillé] set out from Sierra Leone, reached the Niger, and followed it to Kabara, the port of Timbuktu. Thence he went to the mysterious city, saw something of its real character, and crossed the Sahara to Morocco, reaching the coast west of Fez. For this journey, he was rewarded by the Geographical Society of Paris” (Baker, History of Geographical Discovery and Exploration, 307).
