9 volumes. Illustrated with woodblock prints by various artists. 25.5x17.5 cm (10x7"), full morocco ruled in gilt, bear vignette on each cover, bell vignettes at corners and spine panels, raised spine bands, each with two leather spine labels, top edges gilt. One of 387 sets. De Luxe Edition.

De Luxe edition, each volume signed by California pioneers, including numerous "covered wagon babies," signatures of those connected with the opening of the West, etc. Volume I signed by (who was a little girl during the horrific event). The subscribers name and copy number has been inked over on the limitation page of each volume.
