Mech. R.N.); Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., G.V.R., 1st issue (296474 Harry Carter. Mechn. H.M.S. Iron Duke.) good very fine (4) £100-£140---Harry Carter was born on 5 November 1881, at Forton, Hampshire, and commenced his naval service as a Stoker Second Class in H.M.S. Duke of Wellington II, on 22 January 1901. He was advanced to Stoker First Class, H.M.S. Brilliant on 1 July 1906, and to Leading Stoker, on 1 April 1908. He was promoted to Stoker Petty Officer, H.M.S. Bellerophon, on 22 January 1910, and Mechanician, H.M.S. Hindustan, on 1 January 1914. He served during the Great War in H.M.S. Iron Duke, the flagship of the Grand Fleet, and was present at the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916, being awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal that same year. He was advanced to Chief Mechanician, H.M.S.
