Campanian Glazed Pottery Duck Tail Askos

[ translate ]

Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A fine wheel-thrown pottery askos with a squat circular foot, a hemispherical body, a tapering neck with a rolled rim and funnel mouth, and an applied stirrup handle with a projecting thumb rest in the form of a duck tail. The entire vessel is coated in a rich brown glaze save for the area beneath the foot. Askoi, like this example, were used to hold liquids, such as precious scented oils and perfumes which could become viscous when cold. The handle was used to lower the vessel into heated water to liquefy the oil. A lovely example! Size: 4.5" in diameter x 3" H (11.4 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private T.G. collection, Williston, Florida, USA, #2958, acquired in 2001

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to recent increases of shipments being seized by Australian & German customs (even for items with pre-UNESCO provenance), we will no longer ship most antiquities and ancient Chinese art to Australia & Germany.
