Campo del Cielo Meteorite Iron, IAB-MG Chaco, Argentina...

[ translate ]

Campo del Cielo Meteorite Iron, IAB-MG Chaco, Argentina Found: 1576 One of the most popular meteorites in the world, Campo del Cielo represents a significant fall, which produced a large amount of material, over a huge strewn field, and leaving a number of large craters. Remnants from this "Field of Heaven" were first documented as being used by natives dating back to 1576 by military personnel as weapons, although pieces were likely being collected prior to that date. The term actually refers to a grouping of meteorites, and the iron likely fell some 4,000 to 5,000 years ago. This massive example weighs a serious 15 pounds (6.8 kilograms) and offers a flat cut bottom that allows for ideal display without need of a base. A "muddy" patina covers much of the metallic surface, which is complex and textural with various indentations, gashes and rounded points. This huge piece is solid and dense with an artistic shape. The sizable Campo has a partial collection number near the base. Overall Measurements: 6.69 x 6.10 x 4.33 inches (17.00 x 15.50 x 11.00 cm), weighs 6.8 kilograms (15 pounds) [Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
