Description: Capodimonte-Type Polychrome Gilt Majolica Hinged Casket and a Mirrored Two-Light Wall Sconce
Late 19th-Early 20th Century
The lozenge-shaped casket set on four paw feet with two formed vestigial handles and 'Leda and the Swan' and 'Danaë' channel-framed scenes oppositionally centered with scrolling foliate, festoon, and anthropomorphic creatures decorated in relief, flanked by repeating monochromatic bands below and a gilt metal acanthus-decorated mounted gasket above; the lid with armorial crest inset cartouche flanked by raised channels with scrolling foliate and anthropomorphic creatures surrounded by repeating escutcheon motif in relief; the irregular fan-shaped sconce with mirrored backing and decorated with floral festoons, scroll work, and sculpted figural putti with two candle-cup inserts. Both with underglaze blue crowned N to underside. A few isolated, minor surface nicks with inpainting; scattered silvering loss to mirror; minor handling wear with associated surface deterioration with losses in coloration and gilding; accumulated dirt, debris, and residue.
