Captain America Comics #1 (Timely, 1941) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white to white pages. One of the most influential comic books of all time, this major Golden Age key issue features the unforgettable origin and first appearance of Captain America and his teen sidekick, Bucky, as well as the first appearance of Cap's perennial nemesis, the Red Skull. The iconic Hitler-busting cover by the legendary creative duo of Joe Simon & Jack Kirby established Cap as a symbol of American opposition to tyranny, and anticipated the United States' entry into World War II less than a year later. The title also fueled a wave of patriotic-themed superheroes, few of whom survived the post-war era or proved to be as memorable. This is a rare book to say the least, and even rarer in high grades: To date, CGC has certified 194 copies, half of which are Universal grades, and only seven of those have a grade of VF/NM 9.0 or better. This particular copy outscores the Mile High, Kansas City, Windy City, and Promise Collection copies. A historically important issue, it's currently ranked #7 on Overstreet's list of Top 100 Golden Age Comics. Overstreet 2023 NM- 9.2 value = $715,000. CGC census 3/24: 3 in 9.2, 3 higher.
