CAPTAIN JAMES WEIR (1757-1820) James Weir served as a Captain with the Marines aboard the 74-gun ship HMS Audacious between 1795 and 1800. He fought with Nelson at the Battle of the Nile in August 1798 and following the fleet's victory over the French, he travelled back to Britain through the Mediterranean. Along the way, Weir sketched numerous sites in Sicily and Southern Italy while Nelson's ships were receiving repairs in Naples.
