Oil on canvas, framed in a painted wooden frame. A monk in a habit with a long beard sits at a table with a vase of flowers and reads in a book. Signed lower left: C. Frey, Düsseldorf. Measures with frame ca. 79 x 94 cm. Good condition with signs of age and use, canvas slightly bumped in one place, frame detached at one corner. Carl Fey lived 1867- 1939 in Düsseldorf. He studied at the Düsseldorf Academy, made study trips to Holland and painted mostly Lower Rhine and Dutch river, canal, coastal, heath and forest landscapes, as well as children and wine cellar scenes in a loose ductus and with masterful rendering of the light or weather moods.
