Carl Georg Adolph Hasenpflug - View of the Mötteli Castle near Rorschach on Lake Constance
Carl Georg Adolph Hasenpflug
View of the Mötteli Castle near Rorschach on Lake Constance
Oil on canvas (relined). 50.8 x 63.5 cm.
This depiction of the so-called Mötteli Castle (Sulzberg Castle) in Rorschach, on the Swiss side of Lake Constance, can be classified as part of Carl Hasenpflug’s early work. The view of the castle is thought to have been painted around 1825. In 1824, the young artist travelled from Berlin to Lake Constance via Brandenburg, Magdeburg and Erfurt. This journey was made possible by the sale of his first cathedral painting to the Dresden collector Johann Gottlob Quandt.
This finely painted early composition is characterised by its faithful rendering of the topographical setting, combined with a sensitively captured atmospheric evening mood. Over the years, Hasenpflug gained recognition for his extremely precise depictions of cloister corridors and churches.
