Carl Ludwig Schmitz (1907-1967, Germany and America). A bronze sculpture portrait bust of a man. Artist signed C. L. Schmitz, and dated 40 (1940). Mounted on a square wood plinth. Overall height on the base plinth, 18" high. The bust measures 12.5" high, 8" wide, 10" deep.BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Carl L. Schmitz was born in the French city of Metz, then part of Germany, and studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, He immigrated to America in 1923 and attended the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design. He won many awards for his sculpture including a gold medal from the 1937 Internal Exposition in Paris.
