Private Collection, Vienna

In the summer of 1924, Carl Moll spent time in the Salzkammergut region and, prompted perhaps by a nostalgic impulse, sought out motifs in the so-called Scharfling Forest (Scharflinger Wald), which connects the Mondsee and Wolfgangsee areas along a mountain pass. In 1890, the landscape painter and Stimmungsimpressionist Emil Jakob Schindler had painted one of his final masterpieces here, “Waldstraße bei Scharfling”, in which a horse-drawn carriage comes into view at the end of the path.

Carl Moll’s catalogue raisonné documents six variations featuring motifs from the Scharfling Forest; however, it is unique in this painting that he includes the horse-drawn carriage – as if offering a distant homage to Schindler, his mentor, teacher, and paternal friend.
