Carl Philipp Weber (1849 - 1922) Germany
Watercolor on Paper
Measure 10"in H x 14"in W and 16 3/4"in H x 20 1/4"in W with frame

Known for: Romantic and pastoral landscape and coastal scene painting
Name variants: Carl Philipp Webber, C P Weber, C Ph Weber
Biography: Carl Philipp Weber (sometimes with one terminal p on the middle name and occasionally (mistakenly) with Charles as a first name) was born in Darmstadt, Germany in 1849, probably late in the year. As an infant in 1853 he accompanied his parents to the United States, where they settled in Philadelphia. His father, a musician and music teacher, was also named Carl; he was the older brother of Paul Weber, a well-known artist who had earlier settled in Philadelphia and lived there with his family, which included a son, Carl, born Oct. 18, 1850. There are many auction and gallery listings for Charles Philipp Weber, with the same birth and death years as are commonly given (though not accurately) for Carl Philipp Weber. The paintings referenced show that Charles P. and Carl P. is the same person. All of the many listings on the internet indicate that the works shown as for Charles were signed C. Philipp Weber or C. Ph. Weber. None were signed with Charles. How this phantom was created is a mystery. However, there is in the 1860 U.S. Census records, as one of the children of Paul Weber, the father of Carl, a child of the right age but shown as Charles (name errors for children are common in census records). Given the confusion in keeping these two cousins straight, perhaps someone decided that Charles was the name of one of the two cousins. To add to that confusion, Paul Weber was not the father of Carl Philipp Weber. PaulÃÆâ€â„¢ÃƒÆ’†â€Ã¢â€žÂ¢ÃƒÆ’ĉ€ â€ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢€Å¾Ã‚¢ÃƒÆ’Æâ€â„¢ÃƒÆ’¢€Ãƒâ€¦Ã‚¡ÃƒÆ’â€Ã…¡Ãƒâ€Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚¢€ÃƒÆ’Įâ€â„¢ÃƒÆ’†â€Ã¢â€žÂ¢ÃƒÆ’ĉ€Ã…¡Ãƒâ€Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚¢ÃƒÆ’Æâ€â„¢ÃƒÆ’â€Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚¢€ÃƒÆ’ĉ€Ã‚¦¾ÃƒÆ’Įâ€â„¢ÃƒÆ’¢€Ãƒâ€¦Ã‚¡ÃƒÆ’â€Ã…¡Ãƒâ€Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚¢s brother Carl, the musician/music teacher, was the father of Carl Philipp Weber. It is safe to say that Charles Philipp Weber is nothing more than an unfortunate but well-embedded error. In summary, Carl Philipp Weber was the son of Carl Weber, a musician and music teacher. He was born in 1849 (in Darmstadt, Germany) and died on December 12, 1922. Carl Weber was the son of Paul Weber, an artist. He was born on Oct. 18, 1850 (in Philadelphia, PA) and died on January 25, 1921. An artist named Charles Philipp Weber never existed.
