CARLO FRANCESCO NUVOLONE [After]
(Milan, 1609 - 1662)
Bust of a young woman (the poem?)
Oil on canvas, cm. 46. 5 x 38
Frame size cm. 63 x 55 x 6 approx.

NOTES: Work with golden frame (defects) .

This delicate image - depicting a woman - is placed in a stylistic context of seventeenth-century Lombardy and raises interesting questions about the illustrative models that inspired the author.
The present image, in fact, refers to the original (oil on canvas, 69 x 53. 2 cm) created by the artist Carlo Francesco Nuvolone (Milan, 1609 – 1662) , sold at the Pandolfini auction, Florence, 11 October 2017, lot 88. In the original work - extraordinary quality - it is a very high example of Carlo Francesco Nuvolone's ability to convey the softness of the complexions of the face and hands, with the delicate fingers that taper towards the ends, as well as the fluffy hair , up to the bright light in the red folds of the cloak. The painter must have been particularly fond of this invention. Tested in almost full figure in the Ester (Milan, private collection) and here reduced to just the bust, it certainly must have received much favor among collectors because, varied in the clothes or in the deviation of the head or even with the addition of a small angel and transformed into a saint, was replicated by the artist in three different versions: one in New York, F. Mont collection (the closest to ours) ; in Milan, in a private collection, octagonal in shape and with the addition of a little angel on the right, like Saint Catherine (or Philosophy?) ; and another also in a private collection, with the little angel on the right but differently posed in the bust and with both hands on the left (all reproduced in Filippo Maria Ferro, Nuvolone, a family of painters in seventeenth-century Milan, Cremona, 2003 , p. 364, fig. 46;
As regards this copy, the quality of the drafts and the chromatic freshness lead to support the attribution of the work to a talented painter active between the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century using the technique of the past.
Regarding its state of conservation, the canvas has a patina. The measurements of the canvas are cm. 38 x46. 5. The painting is sold with a golden frame (dimensions approx. 55 x 63 x 6 cm, presence of defects) . "The frame shown in the photos above was added to the artwork by the seller or a third party. The frame is provided to you at no additional charge so that it is ready to display as soon as it arrives. The frame is included as a as a courtesy and is not considered an integral part of the artwork. Therefore, any potential damage to the frame that does not affect the artwork itself will not be accepted as a valid reason to open a complaint or request cancellation of the order. . "
