The woman wears long uncovered hair, adorned with flowers, and a low-cut dress, although she is covered with a mantle. The left hand rests on the hip in a very natural way, while the right hand holds a tambourine. A closed fan rests at the woman's feet. The sign at the bottom of the sculpture indicates that it is Carmen, the popular Sevillian cigarette case, the protagonist of Mérimée's novel and later Bizet's opera. The sculpture presents realistic forms, typical of late 19th century sculpture and painting, although slightly idealized.
