Carmichael, Miller, Anderson, Grofe & Lerner! Fantastic Signed Collection!
Archive
An appealing collection of five signed pieces including four photographs and a signed card representing major figures in twentieth-century American music and performance: Marian Anderson, Ferde Grofe, Hoagy Carmichael, Glenn Miller, and Alan Jay Lerner. The collection includes a photographic portrait of celebrated contralto Marian Anderson, signed in blue ink along the right side; a large formal portrait of composer and conductor Ferde Grofe holding a baton, inscribed and signed in black ink; a photograph of songwriter and pianist Hoagy Carmichael seated and reading a newspaper, inscribed "Sincerely" and signed across the upper portion; a vintage autograph of legendary bandleader Glenn Miller on a small card; and a photograph associated with lyricist and librettist Alan Jay Lerner, signed prominently in blue ink. The photographs display varying degrees of expected age and handling, including light toning and occasional surface or edge wear, adding to the vintage character of the collection. Largest measures up to 8 x 10 inches.
Together, these autographs represent an extraordinary cross-section of American musical culture. Marian Anderson was one of the great contraltos of the twentieth century and became an enduring figure in American civil rights history, most famously through her landmark 1939 concert at the Lincoln Memorial before an audience estimated at 75,000. Ferde Grofe was an influential composer, arranger, conductor, and pianist, best remembered for the "Grand Canyon Suite" and for orchestrating George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue." Hoagy Carmichael helped define the American popular songbook through compositions including "Stardust," "Georgia on My Mind," and "The Nearness of You." Glenn Miller became one of the defining bandleaders of the Swing Era, while Alan Jay Lerner, working most famously with composer Frederick Loewe, became one of the foremost lyricists and librettists of the American musical theater. Spanning classical performance, symphonic jazz, popular song, big-band music, and Broadway, this group offers a compelling gathering of autographs from figures whose careers helped shape the sound of twentieth-century America.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
