Carnelian and onyx intaglio ring
late 18th century

Collet-set with a carnelian intaglio depicting a lion, between two onyx intaglios depicting a standing figure and a bull respectively, size M, case stamped Garrard.
Accompanied by a note stating that the ring was given as a gift from the Duc de Berry to Sir [?] James Adam.

Condition Report:
Intaglios with wear, central carnelian intaglio with chip to one edge. Carnelian intaglio measuring approximately 10.69 x 9.24mm. Areas of discoloration and unevenness to metal surface. Overall condition commensurate with age. Gross weight approximately 4.3 grams. Case stamped Garrard & Co. Handwritten note folded and torn.

Provenance:
According to family tradition this ring was a gift to the architect James Adam (1732–1794) by Louis-Auguste, later Louis XVI when a child (1754-1793). However the architect and future King of France are not known to have met.
