Sanandaj, once known as Senneh, is located in the heart of Kurdistan, about 150 km from Hamadan. Its name means “Sanan’s fortress”. It’s also a very renowned city, as it gave the name to the Persian knot, actually also known as “Senneh knot”. Paradoxically, however, the Turkish knot (Ghiordes) is used in the carpets made in this area. Those carpets are traditionally rather small, but in contemporary production the demand from foreign markets has led to the creation of larger formats.
