Carved wooden chest decorated with shellac in "lacca povera" style. Venice. Italy. 18th century.
The exterior structure is painted black, with lacca povera resin decoration, On the lid and the two sides are different motifs of garlands, animals and hunting scenes on an ochre background. The interior is completely polychromed in red, with various lacca povera motifs, both on the door and on the drawers; courtly scenes, animals, vases of flowers, etc. There are various secret compartments inside.
Lacca povera is a type of furniture decoration that was done in 18th century Venice. The technique emerged at the same time as oriental lacquer decoration, which was so in fashion in Europe at the time. The wood was covered with small designs, mostly of diminutive figures, landscapes, animals or courtly scenes, covering part or all of the structure. Later various very fine layers of shellac were applied to make the finish. This technique was used to decorate small objects such as trays and boxes etc. as well as furniture such as trumeau mirrors, chests of drawers, etc.
