Casas Grandes Paquime Polychrome Jar

Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Casas Grandes (Paquime) culture, ca. 900 to 1300 CE. A delightful pottery jar presenting a rounded base, a sloped shoulder, and an attenuated mouth with a flared rim. Enveloped in a pale orange slip, the vessel's exterior is hand-painted in black and red with a thick, horizontal band of interlocking zigzag and spiral motifs. The Casas Grandes (or Chihuahua) culture has always been the best known of the prehistoric cultures of northwest Mexico. International awareness of the culture first derived from its polychrome pottery and from the massive ruins of the culture's principal center, Casas Grandes ?now better known as Paquime. Condition Report: Professionally repaired and restored; all done expertly and very difficult to notice. Some minor chips to rim and light surface wear as shown. Otherwise, excellent presentation with great remains of painted imagery and nice mineral deposits to interior. Old collection label on underside of base.
