Casas Grandes Polychrome Vessel Abstract Face

Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Paquime/Casas Grandes, ca. 1150 to 1450 CE. An intriguing hand-built pottery vessel of a stable, round-bottomed form, with tall walls and a rectangular mouth flanked by two pairs of drilled suspension holes, all decorated with applied red and black pigment atop the cream-hued ground. One end of the vessel features an abstract anthropomorphic face with impressed circular eyes, a squat triangular nose, raised eye brows, and pursed lips which appear to be whistling, and the back of the vessel exhibits a petite conical 'tail.' Size: 9.1" L x 6.25" W x 5" H (23.1 cm x 15.9 cm x 12.7 cm)

Condition Report: Most of base repaired with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines and fissures. Minor nicks to mouth rim, head, and tail, with fading to original pigmentation, and light encrustations within interior. Great earthen deposits and manganese blooms as well as nice traces of original pigmentation throughout. Old inventory label beneath base.
