Casas Grandes Stone 3 Quarters Groove Axe Head

Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Chihuahua region, Casas Grandes, ca. 1100 to 1450 CE. A hefty three-quarters-groove axe head that is hand-carved from lustrous stone of dark-green hues. The vertical blade head tapers down to a sharp edge while the sizable butt end allowed the user to put ample force behind every blow. The groove around the midsection shows that this axe could have been used by hand or by attaching it to the end of a lengthy wooden pole. Size: 6.2" L x 2.125" W x 2.625" H (15.7 cm x 5.4 cm x 6.7 cm)

Provenance: private Reinsmoen collection, Clear Lake, Iowa, USA, acquired through descent from Robert Anderson, acquired prior to 2000
