It is represented in this Renaissance relief the visit that the Virgin, already pregnant of Christ, makes to her older cousin Elizabeth, pregnant of St. John the Baptist, a theme taken from the Gospel of Luke (1: 39-56). Both women embrace, occupying the center of the composition, and their canons are larger than those of the side characters: Joseph and Elizabeth's companion appear minimized by their size, a resource inherited from a medieval tradition. However, the naturalistic treatment of the drapery, anatomy and features is fully Renaissance. The tunics and capes of the figures, worked in high relief, fall in broken folds in whose meanders dynamic games of chiaroscuro are drawn. In the remains of polychromy a skillful recreation of brocades can be appreciated.
