Cate Blanchett | 2016 Atelier Versace Custom Oroton Chainmail Evening Gown
Custom Oroton chainmail Atelier Versace sequin evening gown worn by Cate Blanchett at the 18th Costume Designers Guild Awards at The Beverly Hilton Hotel on February 23, 2016, in Beverly Hills, California. Click here for image.
This is a streamlined silhouette with a fitted bust, waist, and hips going into a A-line shape skirt. The back of the gown has an oval cut-out with a draped mesh accent attached to the shoulders that cowls. The dress is composed of metal discs connecting at four points that creates a fluidity as well as a defined shape in how it rests on the body. This fabric was introduced in Gianni's runway collection in 1982 and became a hallmark of the atelier.
Cate Blanchett received the Lacoste Spotlight Award in recognition of her support of costume design and the many memorable, fashion-forward characters she has brought to the screen. For the occasion, she matched the dress with a Tiffany & Co diamond bib necklace. Speaking to Fashionista, Blanchett's stylist Elizabeth Stewart said, "We loved how the metallic chain mail contrasted with the sparkle of the diamonds... It's an unusual twist on a very classic look." The look perfectly balanced classic elegance with a modern edge, making it one of Blanchett's standout red carpet moments.
Blanchett told Vouge Australia, "I adore costumes. I always have. My sister trained as a costume and set designer and I as an actor, and we used to play this game every weekend, where she would dress me up and I would inhabit the form that she had given me."
Elizabeth Stewart has worked with Cate Blanchett since 2006, when Cate's publicist first reached out to Stewart. Stewart has always admired Cate and her approach to fashion, recalling, "Do you want to work with Cate? Who's going to say no to that?" Blanchett has also been a strong advocate for rewearing fashion. At Cannes, she re-wore a dress she first wore to the 2014 Golden Globes, saying, "Clothes are meant to be cherished, they're meant to be worn for a lifetime, it's ridiculous to not re-wear them, they're not disposable." Stewart called it a great statement, reflecting the thoughtful approach to fashion that has become part of Blanchett's red-carpet style.
